Sex and the City: Carrie's "Big" Problem

I've been a fan of Sex and the City since I was a junior to high school, and consider Carrie Bradshaw to be one of my biggest influencers. I also credit her to being the reason why I started to blog, which later lead me to decide I wanted to write professionally. However, even though I'm obsessed with the show, I have a few bones to pick about the show that as I've gotten older that I've been having problems with.
I speak for myself when I say most of the show is extremely relatable. I'm a lot like Carrie. For example, we're both shopaholics, we both overthink and we both are writers. However, the portrayal of her relationship with Mr. Big was a big too overdramatic.
Carrie constantly overthought and overreacted to many things when it came to that relationship. For example, when Mr. Big hadn't called her after having sex on the first date, Carrie assumed that he didn't want to talk to her ever again. Later on in that same episode, Carrie began to think that Mr. Big was ashamed of her based on a few minor details. Naturally, he wasn't. She later storms in and yells at him. Another example, is a few episodes later when she farts while in bed with Mr. Big. Through out that episode, she tries everything to get him to sleep with her again. Notice the pattern? She often jumps to conclusions.
These are just a few examples that we see in the early seasons of the show, where Carrie and Big's relationship was the most prominent one featured. Each of these moments demonstrates Carrie being insecure about Big and whether or not he actually felt something for her. I think she wanted the relationship to be perfect, so if he showed any signs of pulling away, she'd assume it was because he was no longer interested in her. And, that's not always the case.
People aren't always going to act like Prince Charming 24/7. Mr. Big is an example of that, because he had other things going on in his life. Since he was a big businessman, he'd often have to travel and be away.

Carrie on the other hand, would just obsess constantly about the relationship. She often would do anything to be with him, such as ditch her friends, and later on have an affair. While Carrie and Big were in fact meant to be together in my opinion, her behavior in the early seasons was often seen as being over the top. She's overanalyzing her fart, and then she makes a total idiot of herself as he's trying to watch a baseball game. If someone's watching a game, chances are they wanted to be focused on the game. And it has nothing to do with Carrie.
I think the reason why she's acting this way is simply because she's insecure about the relationship ending, and that he's going to leave her based on the fact that she's not perfect. She's so afraid he's going to leave her, so when he does something that's out of the ordinary or something that mirrors him pushing away so she'll freak out about it. And that's a big problem in my opinion.
When I first saw the show, I honestly thought her behavior was normal. As I got older, I began to realize that she's acting a bit too ridiculous when it comes to those things. Don't worry Carrie, I still love you. But, you have to chill out and realize Mr. Big actually loves you.

Valentine's Day is almost here. There's talk of love everywhere. Do you love your boyfriend? Dog? Well, what about you? You're important, after all and you really need to make sure that you're taken care of.
We as a society sometimes forget that and provoke that mindset. Well, I am a huge fan of treating myself because I think that everyone needs to feel loved. Valentine's Day is all about love. That means going out to buy your boyfriend some sort of gift, yes I agree with that. However, that also should mean going out and buying yourself something.
And for all of you single gals out there, you for sure don't need a boyfriend. Go treat yourself to something tomorrow, because you're an excellent person. Whether it's candy, a sparkling new bauble, or something else go out and buy something that makes you happy.
The relationship that I myself that I need to work on is the one that I have with myself. I need to love myself more because let's face it, I've been way too hard on myself especially as of late. I have insecurities up to wazoo, and doubt and worry like it's my third job. I believe that it's something that I could work on. I have so far, with constant journaling, and using the book 'The Happiness Project.' Putting yourself first isn't selfish, even though sometimes people may think that it is. I have dealt with pressure from society  about my weight, my way of life, my relationship status, and even what I choose to do for a living. There are people in this world that could make you feel like you're not worth anything, and that is complete bull.
Even though it's a total cliche, let me say this. Put yourself first. Love yourself. Love others. Tomorrow is the day of love, so love you.

Carrie Bradshaw is my idol. I've been a huge fan of Sex and the City since I was in high school. The early versions of my blog were in fact modeled after Carrie's column 'Sex and the City.' I used to have a Mr. Big, who shall not be named, and named my friends after various people. However, my blog evolved from a 'Sex and the City' wannabe blog. I joke about it now, but without that blog, I wouldn't have become the writer that I have become. Carrie is my idol, and here's why.
She has relationship insecurities. Remember the episode of Sex and the City where Carrie farted in front of Big and she freaked out. Yes, that was done a little bit over the top. However, how many times has that happened to you? You freak out about something small, and then it blows up big. She was always insecure about everything. I myself can relate because I am always doubting my relationships. Yes, it's a little bit crazy, but can't you all relate?

She's a writer. She writes with her heart, which is something that I aspire to do. Her pieces and her articles are very original. I mean come on, who else could get away with writing 'who came here first-chicken or the sex?' I also have the motto what would Carrie write. Hands down, she was the original blogger and made writing cool.
I want my first legal drink to be a cosmopolitan. I can't wait til 21 just so I can get one of these and feel like a posh member of the foursome.

She's a friend first.  Carrie may have her faults, but she is a really good friend to the girls. She goes to Miranda's abortion, is Samantha's shoulder to cry on when she learns that she has breast cancer, and comes to Charlotte's rescue countless times. She sometimes ditches her friends, but at the end of the day she's a truly great friend. How many of us yearn to have lunches like Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte? I know that I have.
She makes her own rules. Carrie and Big did bridal a lot differently then anyone else. They got married on their own terms, which is something that I applaud. From the very beginning of Sex and the City, Carrie always tried to do things that were right for her. And that's something that should be applauded.
She's not good with money. Carrie has the best shoes. Hands down. She believes that money should be hanging in her closet. Who else would agree?

Why Is Sex and the City A Modern Hit?

Picture it. 1998. New York City. Four fabolous single girls. What are you thinking of? If you're thinking of  'Sex and the City', then you've won the million dollar prize.
'Sex and the City' is one of the best television shows of the 90s. It tells the story of Carrie, who is a 30 something New York writer, who writes the colum called Sex and the City. She uses romantic situations that she and her three fabolous friends Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte encounter for material of her column. Since the show's ending in 2004, it has sparked 2 movies, a prequel show called 'The Carrie Diaries', and a bunch of loyal followers who to this day melt when Mr. Big finally tells Carrie that she is in fact the one. My question is, why is it still a bible for all women everywhere?
Well, my answer is that it's just so relatable. The show is controverisal, yes. It expliots topics include sex, abortion, pregnancy, and marriage. The topics that are explored aren't exactly traditional. But everyone can relate to the problems that the characters on the show face such as when Carrie worries why Mr. Big won't call. We've all been there, and it's just so comforting to know that we're not alone in dealing with all of the trials and errors of love. It's a jungle out there, and the only people that we sometimes can call for comfort are our friends.
 
 
I may not have a Charlotte, Samantha, or a Miranda in my cliche, but I do have an Elisa and a Gabriel. They, like those four single gal pals, are my support system through out life. 'Sex and the City' may have premiered it's final episode over ten years ago, but I still watch it religously whenever I can. I like to think of myself as Carrie, who navigates the streets of New York similiarly to the way she navigates the streets of love. We all maybe not be perfect, but in some ways we can all aspire to be the person that we're meant to be, and it's pretty fabolous. Carrie Bradshaw taught me that.
So go ahead watch 'Sex and the City' for the 100th time. I will now leave you with my favorite Carrie quotes that have in fact survived the ages.

"Simply the Best"-Sunday Social

Hey guys, so I'm linking up with Ashley today for a Sunday linkup!

1. What was your best birthday?

My best birthday is a tie between my 19th birthday and my 16th birthday. My 19th because I got to spend it with my friends, and I got my first smartphone, which is naturally exciting. My 16th because of the cookie cake (see below)

2. What was your best vacation?

My best vacation is when I went to New York to Little Italy. Being Italian, I thought that this was exciting because for that moment that was the closest thing that I would get to Italy. Plus, the food was the bomb.

3. What is the best date you've ever been on?

Hmm...do coffee dates with Gabriel count? Honestly, they are the best person to get coffee with because we have the best conversations ever.

4. What is the best movie(quality) you've seen?

The best movie that I've ever seen has to be a cross between American Hustle, and Titanic. Both movies are just so good that I couldn't simply just pick one. 

5. What is the best TV show ending of all time?

Sex and the City. Hands down.

Favorite TV Characters...Ever.

Part of the thing that makes a television show so great is the characters that are a part of the story. How many of your #mancrushmondays, or your #womancrushwednesdays are a fictional television character? They make the show ten times better because without them the show would be boring. With out further a due ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my favorite television shows ever.

Schmidt: Schmidt has to be one of my favorite television characters. He's a douchebag, for lack of better terms. But underneath it all, he's one of the sweetest guys. He has the best intentions, although they don't always go as executed. He's hilarious, and he's always doing something comical. Therefore, he's always going to be one of my favorite characters. Plus, I've now come to terms with saying "Oh schimdt all of the time."

Frank Barone: One of my favorite shows as a kid is the comedy Everybody Loves Ray. Frank was one of my favorites, because he's not afraid to say what's on his mind. It's really hilarious how blunt he can be. He's always able to make me laugh. Plus, deep down he's that grandpa who always cares about his grandchildren.

Jess Day; One of my three television role models, Jess Day is quirky, not afraid to be a bit geeky, and everyone can relate to that. Myself included.


Carrie Bradshaw; Carrie Bradshaw was the original blogger, lemme say that. She's my favorite television character ever, because she's always looking for love. Even though sometimes she doesn't succeed, she still looks for it, and her writing is so honest and fresh. She's a role model to everyone, myself included. Plus she's on not one but two television shows. Pretty cool, huh?

Lorelei Gilmore: Lorelei is perhaps my favorite characters ever. She's very into coffee, she talks fast, and is very spunky. She's very independent, and she doesn't need the help of anyone. I like that most about her. I often quote Lorelei, because I look up to her.

Sheldon Cooper; Sheldon Cooper is so blunt, and he in my opinion is what's making the Big Bang Theory. He's so geeky and awkward and it's great. My favorite Sheldon moment is when he was trying to get his learner's permit and he ended up harassing the lady at the DMV. I wish getting my permit was that easy.

Sophia Petrillo: Sophia is my favorite character because she simply doesn't care what she says to people and how she affects them. She's not afraid to call Rose 'stupid', and Blanche a 'slut'. She's fearless, and she's what I want to be when she's my age.

• What is your favorite thing to watch on girl's night?

Something super romantic and cheesy-like a Nicholas Sparks movie. I don't know why but a lot of my friends and I are into those super cry me a river kind of movies. Another favorite is Titanic, because come on it's a classic. 

•  What is your favorite thing to watch on your day off?

A favorite has to be Gilmore Girls, mainly cause I have the entire series on DVD. Basically any sitcom would do.  I'm also a fan of the Golden Girls, Sex and the City, Fraiser, and Secret Life. 

• What is your favorite thing to watch when you're sick?

Whatever's on TV really. I'm so lazy that I just watch random television. 

• What is the last movie you saw in the theater?

American Hustle! Read my review!

• What are your top three favorite movies or tv shows?

Gilmore Girls, Sex and the City, and Nashville. 

Sex And The City-In Your Life

It's safe to say that every blogger wants to be Carrie Bradshaw in some way shape or form. Sex and the City is iconic show that is timeless. However, you don'thave to move to New York to have the same characters in your life. I am sure there is a Sex and the City character in your life;

The Samantha; She's wild, reckless, fearless, and not afraid of anyone. She's def not afraid to tell it like it is. She is not afraid to try something new, and to have a great time doing it. However, she is one of the more loyal friend that you will ever have because she's got your back.

Aidan; The good-guy that you wonder what the hell you did to deserve him. Aidan has you on the brain constantly, and isn't afraid to let you know that. He treats you like a queen on a throne, just cause he thinks you deserve it. One word to the people who have this in their lives-don't let him go. He's great, and extremely rare.

Charlotte; Charlotte is the gal who is the most tightly bound. She believes in romance and fairy tales. She def doesn't kiss and tell, and squeals when the Samantha does.

Mr. Big; Basically that ex that you can't stop thinking about. He doesn't know what he wants and expects that you will be there waiting for him. So, he strings you along. Otherwise known as the yo-yo relationship.

Miranda; The Miranda of your group is logical and independent. She doesn't fall for some guys' line, and doesn't put up with everything. Miranda thinks that there's more to life than just sex or men, such as a career. Yes, she's driven.

Stanford; The Stanford is extremely flamboyant, and has ze best one liners. He's one of a kind, and with him you'll always have a good time. He knows how to make you smile, and it's safe to say he's closer to you than most of your girls. I think it's extremely important to have a Stanford in your life because he knows how to make you laugh...and protect you.

Carrie; Last but not least, we have the one and only Carrie Bradshaw. She's just a girl who wants to find herself, expensive shoes, and love. She over analyzes pretty much everything, and is extremely passionate in her writing. She's that friend whose always there for you, no matter what you're going through, and is the glue of your friendships.

So, after reading this the answer may be clear on whose the Samantha, the Carrie, etc in your life. And if these don't fit your fabolous friends? That's okay too because your friends are fabolous the way that they are.
