We've all had those books that we just can't put down. You know the books when you can read a hundred pages, and not notice that you've actually read that much. The books that you had to have the moment that they come out in the stores. First it was Harry Potter. Than it was the Hunger Games. Now, as the movies begin to spike in popularity, it's Divergent.
I'm on book one, because I'm one of those people who has to read the books before seeing the movies and watching the shows. However, this is a must read.
Divergent is similar to the Hunger Games when it talks about a futuristic society. There are five factions, and when you turn 16, you get tested into one. Beatrice Prior however tests into three different factions, which makes her Divergent, and puts her in very great danger. The story follows Beatrice's choice as she enters into the faction that she chooses and we watch her transform into a completely different person.
Recently, the book has become popular because of the recent movie starring former Secret Life of the American Teenager star Shailene Woodley. The movie opened number one, and is still a popular movie in it's third week at theaters.
It's not a common thing to turn books into movies, and for them to be box offices hits. Movies such as the Great Gatsby, the Harry Potter series, and the Hobbit movies have struck box office gold. All of them have one thing in common-being best sellers. However books such as Something Borrowed, which were good as books, flopped in movies.
Divergent is no different, because it's a best selling novel AND has become box office royalty. I think that the most important thing to remember while trying to turn books into movies is to make the movies as close to the books as possible. That way, they are honor the movies as close as humanly possible. However, we do have to keep in mind that we can't fit 5 hundred pages in a two hour time slot, and thus things would have to get cut.
So, the bottom line? If you're looking for a book to read, Divergent is the best book for you.
